THE UNION Canal has had a spruce up thanks to 90 junior school pupils who took part in a litter pick.
Teachers of Norwood Green Junior School set year four students an environmental awareness project that involved a field trip along the Union Canal in Southall to pick up litter and encourage residents in the area not to drop rubbish.
The students made colourful posters that were hung in the windows of several businesses bordering the Union Canal asking people in the area to be more aware of the negative effects of littering on the environment and local wildlife.
One of the teachers Ms Emily Mcguire said: "The students filled a number of large rubbish bags with litter restoring the natural beauty of the waterside environment and they also learned a lot about the birds that made their homes along the water. Several residents living close to the canal even came out to thank the students for making the area a cleaner and safer place for the wildlife and the residents alike. Most importantly, the students had a great time, and learned valuable lessons in environmental awareness."
