CHILDREN enjoyed an afternoon of fun in the sun when St Matthew's School held its summer fete on Saturday.

More than 400 people visited the fete, which was held at the school in High Street, Yiewsley, and featured a five-a-side football tournament and face painting as well as a country dancing demonstration.

The Reverend Richard Young, vicar of St Matthew's Church, and school governor,John Congram, were suitably soaked in a sponge-throwing contest, while Community Support Police Officers organised a competition for children to draw the best traffic sign.

Visitors also had the opportunity to browse stalls laden with cakes, books and plants, and try their hand at many traditional games, including hook-a-duck and beat the buzzer.

The fete was set up by The Friends Association, which arranges extra-curricular activities for pupils at St Matthew's School.

More than £2,000 was raised towards keeping the organisation afloat.

Louise Young, event organiser, said: "Saturday was a great success - we had lovely weather,a fantastic turnout, and everyone seemed to be having a wonderful time.

"We would like to thank all the local shopkeepers for generously giving discounts or donating prizes for the raffle and tombola, and also to thank everyone who turned up to support the school. Without their kindness, the summer fete could not have happened."
