AN INSPIRATIONAL and hard-working mother has won a Tesco Mum of the Year Award 2014.

Ranu Mehta, 56, of Wrenwood Way, Pinner, who is married to Atul, 58, and has two children Devi, 24, and Rishi, 22, was nominated for the supermarket award by a former student.

Nineteen years ago she founded, along with five other parents, The Sai School in Harrow, a charity-based school that meets at the weekends at Shaftesbury High School, in Headstone Lane, Harrow, to provide a multi-faith education programme and a curriculum based on citizenship and human values.

Mrs Mehta said: “Initially we funded it ourselves, literally dipping into our grocery shopping money until donations began to come in.

“Serving the nation remains a priority for us, we want to spread our wings and resonate this message to all children and young people.

“I am blessed that my husband and children allow me to get on with it.”

Mrs Mehta’s story touched the hearts of the Tesco Mum of the Year Awards’ judging panel, including radio DJ Sara Cox, TV presenter Gabby Logan and Olympic gold medallist and TV personality Denise Lewis.

She will be presented with her enterprising mum award – one of six categories – at a star-studded ceremony at The Savoy, in London, on Sunday, March 23.

In 2005, The Sai School received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Services in recognition of its contribution to society.

The school has 300 pupils and is run by 40 volunteers, many of whom are former pupils.

Mrs Mehta said: “We’ve handed over the school to the young people who are using the leadership skills they gained while they were there.

“They are much sharper with the technology in classrooms and younger children relate to them well. I am proud to say they are wonderful role models.”

As well as collecting the award, Mrs Mehta will also be treated to a full makeover and her own Tesco Living magazine photoshoot.

Debbie Chernin, Tesco Mum of the Year Awards manager, said: “It is a privilege to be able to recognise the achievements of an amazing woman and mum like Ranu.

“The Sai School now has 300 pupils and the children come from all across London for its unique educational programme.

“This is truly an incredible accomplishment.”
