Nick Hurd will retain his position as MP for Ruislip, Northwood and Pinner, after beating his rivals in the General Election.

The Conservative MP held his seat with 59.6% of the vote, beating his closest contender, Labour's Michael Borio, by 20,224 votes.

In a speech made after the results were announced, Mr Hurd said: “It's a massive privilege to serve this constituency. I never take it for granted. I never will take it for granted.

"And I'm so grateful for the opportunity to continue the work supporting individual constituents and working alongside councillors and residents to fight for the things that we value here and protect the quality of life in this area from the various threats, whether it be the third runway at Heathrow, whether it be the closure of the Harrow Arts Centre, or, last but not least, the terrible damage that the current HS2 proposals will inflict on Harefield, Ickenham and West Ruislip, which we will fight with our argument for a tunnel extension.”

The final count was announced at Brunel University, in Uxbridge, at around 4am on Friday (May 8) – the second of three hotly-awaited constituency results.

Voter turnout for the constituency was 70.15% - down from 71.05% in 2010.

Mr Hurd received 30,521 votes; Mr Borio received 10,297; UKIP's Gerard Barry got 5,598; Liberal Democrat Joshua Dixon won 2,537; the Green Party's Karen Pillai got 1,801; Wally Kennedy, of the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition, got 302; and the National Liberal Party's Sockalingam Yogalingam got 166.

The number of spoiled votes was 159.

Runner-up Mr Borio said: “I've enjoyed going around the constituency meeting various groups and also different citizens, and I've taken up some of the cases in my role as a Harrow councillor and I'll continue to keep in touch with those people.

“Thank you very much.”

The constituency has generally been considered a Tory safe seat.

Mr Hurd was first elected to represent what was then Ruislip-Northwood in 2005.

He has staunchly opposed HS2, arguing that if the project must go ahead it should not include a so-called spur linking the track to Heathrow Airport.

Among other causes he has fought, he has also tried to secure money to rebuild Hillingdon Hospital.
