The '£1 Fish Man' might have been an internet sensation but a chippy in Ruislip has gone one better, serving up 99p fish and chip suppers.

There is nothing fishy about the cheap as chips deal at Aquarius Fish Bar on May 17.

Owner Mustafa Ogretici will serve up cod and chips for just 99p as part of a celebration of Norwegian cod.

The chippy in Victoria Road, Ruislip Manor, one of only three in the borough to have won a National Federation of Fish Fryers’ Fish and Chip Quality Award, has teamed up with the Norwegian Seafood Council to sell the 99p portions from 11am-3pm, if stocks last long enough, to celebrate Norway Day.

The seafood council is working with 99 fryers across the UK because, it says, it wants to hark back to the golden era of chip shops.

Aquarius is one of 11 shops in London getting a share of 16 tonnes of cod that has been shipped from Norway for the event and the council expects nearly 40,000 people across the country to benefit from the deal.

Mr Ogretici said: “We are so pleased to be taking part in this annual celebration. Fish and chips are a firm favourite across the borough.

“I know that our customers will enjoy the delicious Norwegian cod and chips on offer - and they will certainly enjoy the prices too.”

Norway Day, or Norwegian Constitution Day, is celebrated as an official holiday across the country.

The 99p deal coincides with the 200th anniversary of the signing of the Norwegian constitution. The Norwegian Seafood Council said the sustainability of cod is a major selling point, and it says cod stocks are carefully managed to safeguard the fish for generations to come.
