WITH regard to MPs' allowances, it is highly commendable that Gareth Thomas, MP for Harrow West, had the decency and honesty to make public his expenses on his own website long before parliament ordered this to be done.
This allowance system was introduced in the early 1980s by Margaret Thatcher as a way of giving MPs a massive pay rise to help them run constituency and parliamentary offices without offending the general public. Small wonder then that rot and corruption set in, and I am quite simply amazed at the surprise and apparent lack of knowledge about this that people appear to be displaying. I thought everyone knew MPs made up their salaries and ran their offices in this way?
Having moats and swimming pools cleaned and non-existent mortgages paid for is clearly unacceptable, but I wonder how many self-employed people could hold up their last 12 years' accounts to public scrutiny and not have a single item queried?
Today's society always seems to want to blame someone, rather than sort out the problem and move on. Well if anyone is to blame for this, it is the person who was in charge when it was introduced with such deliberately vague and wishy-washy rules; Margaret Thatcher.
