A 'Bottom' bench in memory of Rik Mayall will be unveiled in Hammersmith this afternoon.

Fans and family of the TV comic are expected to attend the special event at 2pm this afternoon, at the junction of Queen Caroline Street and Hammersmith Bridge Road.

Its location marks the spot featured in the opening credits of the cult 1990s comedy Bottom, which starred Mr Mayall and Adrian Edmondson.

It showed the pair bickering on a bench before Mr Mayall's character smacks his friend between the legs.

There has been a growing clamour for a bench to return to the spot since Mr Mayall died suddenly in June this year, aged 56, with fan Jaime Bird launching an online petition earlier this year to get the council to place a bench at the junction.

It will feature an engraving by Mr Mayall's Young Ones co-star Nigel Planner and the ceremony today is expected to include a number of comedy sing-alongs, including the theme to The Young Ones, and Living Doll, which The Young Ones sung with Cliff Richard.

A mock blue plaque was put up in memory of Rik Mayall

Following his death earlier this year, the 'Bottom' junction became a shrine for Mr Mayall, with fans leaving flowers and tributes.

It included a blue 'True English Heritage' plaque, which read: “Rik Mayall 1958 – 2014. Punched his friend in the balls on a bench near this spot.”

As well as Bottom and The Young Ones, Mr Mayall also appeared in comedies including Blackadder and The New Statesmen.
