A NEW community green and play area was officially opened at Wood Lane Estate on Saturday.

Residents of the estate have been working with regeneration charity Groundwork London for two years to help re-design the dilapidated area of land.

Cash grants totalling £48,000 were donated from Hammersmith and Fulham Homes' Housing Estate Improvement Programme, Kensington Housing Trust, Breyer Group Ltd and Grassroots Grant towards the project.

Around 40 residents came out to celebrate the opening at the weekend with Kathy Bolan, of Wood Lane Estates Residents' and Tenants Association cutting the ribbon.

Youngsters took part in planting workshops and bird-box making and cut a celebratory cake modelled in the shape of the green and new play-area.

Moira Herring, Groundwork London community project officer, said: "It was really exciting to launch this fantastic community space, which is the result of the hard work of many residents, something of which they should be very proud."

One of the highlights of the new play community space is a mosaic of birds, insects and other wildlife created by residents during last summer.
