CAMPAIGNERS ensured their closed library building didn't fall into disrepair by giving the outside an overhaul.

People who are fighting to save Preston Road library and five others in the borough had noticed that the outside of their nearest library had deteriorated and looked unloved.

Margaret Smith and a group of volunteers worked hard to reverse the decline.

She said: "The abandoned and neglected building and grounds seemed to serve as a metaphor for Brent Council Executive's attitude towards its constituents and acted as painful reminder every time you passed it that our own Councillors have almost totally deserted us.

"The loss of our library facility has left a massive gaping hole in our community's resource. It was heartbreaking to witness the deterioration in our midst. We take pride in where we live, and could not leave it to become an eyesore and a dumping ground and therefore a magnet for vandalism and graffiti or used as a venue for drug taking or liaisons, which has already begun. Is this what we get for paying our council tax?

"I did wonder if this was the old tactic of let-it-rot and then have the perfect excuse to demolish or otherwise?"
