Essential work to a church in Ealing is underway to repair the turrets, high level arches and south side tower.

A F Jones Stone Masons, based in Reading, has started the second phase of the extensive project on St Peter’s Church in Mount Park Road, which is estimated to take six months to complete.

Churchwarden Allison McAllister said: “Everyone is excited to see the work in progress. This is an extensive project; partly due to the age and weathering of the building but also because many years ago the turrets and high level cornices were treated using inappropriate cement based mortar which has degraded the stonework causing them to spall and fall apart creating health and safety issues.

“The first phase started in 2012 and was also undertaken by A F Jones, which proved extremely successful as their work was completed to such a high standard.

“Several additional issues with the building were discovered at that time, making phase two a priority.

“The church is an integral part of the community, so restoring and returning St Peter’s to its former glory will have a significant impact.”

Funding for the £550,000 project (phase one and two – architectural and masonry) has been secured through various fundraising activities and a variety of generous donations from organisations such as English Heritage, the Heritage Lottery Fund and National Churches Trust.
