Last week's Mumbai attacks were a sickening indiscriminate act of agression that, far from setting Muslims and Hindus against each other, has united them in condemnation of terrorism.

Families in the borough have felt the full force of the fatal raids and siege with the loss of relatives, friends or colleagues in India.

News media warned revelations that the last surviving gunman had confessed to being part of an Ismalic terrorist organisation from Pakistan would inflame tensions between the two countries.

But Muslim and Hindu representatives in Harrow have spoken out against the crime in the gravest terms. Relations between the two populations are extremely good in the borough, so calm is expected to prevail.

In fact, both Muslims and Hindus are victims, whether on the receiving end of the savage and brutal terrorist attacks or having to come to terms with yet another tragedy that casts a shadow over the religion's peaceful majority.

Still time to cheer a child

THERE is just one week left to donate to the Observer's Christmas Toy Appeal and we need your help to make sure it is a success.

Over the years readers have given generously to help sick children spending the festive season in Northwick Park Hospital.

This time will be more difficult because of the credit crunch, but adding just one gift to your list will make a poorly child very happy.

We have seen the pleasure a new toy can bring to a seriously ill child, especially when it is given by a famous person they recognise.

On December 11 Scouting For Girls hand out the presents. We thank the band for taking time out of their busy schedule to support our campaign, and Harrow Council for storing the toys in its libraries.

Now it is down to readers to give generously during this last week.
