CAMPAIGNERS fighting against the High Speed 2 rail plans were relieved to learn a proposed link to Heathrow has been relocated from Northolt.

A junction to connect the capital’s main airport to the new high speed rail tracks from London to Birmingham was set to be built near Northolt Tube station, metres from Willow Tree Primary School.

The new route, revealed last week, could now be built between Ickenham and West Ruislip in Hillingdon.

Action group Ealing North Against HS2 said the change reinforces its demands for the line to be tunnelled beneath the borough.

Chairman Alex Nieora, speaking after a meeting with HS2 chiefs in Northolt last week, said: “Now we know the Heathrow spur is not intended to be at Northolt junction, that strengthens the case for a tunnel under Ealing because the junction needed to be over ground. We will continue campaigning and continue fighting for this because homes will be going in the Northolt area.”

HS2 engineers said the decision to include a tunnel was out of their hands and up to the Department for Transport.

About 25 people from residents associations in Greenford, Northolt and Perivale attended the meeting.
