IN YOUR article ('Service in tribute to fighter pilots' Harrow Observer, August 21) you quote me as saying in relation to the proposed open days at the former RAF Bentley Priory: '... this is a great opportunity to see Bentley Priory before it is demolished.'

Before any of your readers has a heart attack or fit of apoplexy, can I assure them I did not say that and can I assure them Bentley Priory is not going to be demolished. Quite the opposite.

The former RAF Bentley Priory site is certainly going to be redeveloped, but the Bentley Priory buildings and gardens will be preserved and opened up as a museum in hopefully 2011 under the aegis of the Battle of Britain Trust.

For the first time in 40 years the public will have open access to the Bentley Priory buildings from September 11-14.

It is unlikely there will be a further chance of open access until 2011. So yes it will be 'a great opportunity'.

Anyone who is interested in helping or who wants to get in touch with the Battle of Britain Trust can contact Squadron Leader Erica Ferguson on 07813 856 719 during office hours or email her on or contact the Civic Trust on

Further information about the open days will be available next week or consult

Information about the Battle of Britain thanksgiving service will also be available next week from the Mayor's Office and on the Harrow Council website.

I would strongly encourage all local residents to fully support both events.
