THERE is a huge gap between the best and worst recycling boroughs in London.

For example, Bexley recycles over half its waste, while Newham recycles a mere 15 per cent. This doesn't mean people in one part of London are somehow born three times more likely to recycle than people in another part.

The truth is some councils have made it easy for people to recycle, and their residents have responded.

If people are given the chance to recycle a larger range of materials then they will.

This is especially true of kitchen and garden waste. It is time for the London mayor to get a grip on this and ensure all Londoners have the same opportunity to help their environment.

His current draft waste strategy does little to help people in flats recycle and he fails to ensure that every Londoner will have a separate kitchen waste collection. Londoners across the capital should have the same opportunities to do something practical for their environment.
