A heated debate saw getwestlondon readers saying 'No' to Diwali and Eid becoming public holidays following a Parliamentary debate.

Bob Blackman, Conservative MP for Harrow East, backed a petition rejected by government yesterday during a debate.

We asked you what you thought this morning, and 62 per cent of you agreed with the government's decision to reject the call for the sacred Muslim and Hindu dates to be made public holidays.

Should Muslim and Hindu holidays Eid and Diwali be made public holidays?

Melissa Giles, writing on our Facebook page, said: "No because we are not a Muslim or Hindu country."

Kiran Sanghera said: "I'm Sikh but I wouldn't want this either. Once you start doing holidays for one religion then your just opening the flood gates. This is a Christian country, leave its principles and laws as they are!!!"

Sarah Ryder said: "No definatly [sic] no."

However some did back Mr Blackman and the 123,000 who have signed the e-petition so far.

Rafi Khan said: "Yes i am happy for it y [sic] not we all deserve holiday base on our religious."

getwestlondon readers also took to Twitter to share their toughts.

The petition is still available to sign until August, however it is now unlikely to move forward after being knocked back by the government.
