Reader Yvette Papps spotted this sooty squirrel in her garden and is wondering if anyone else has seen one.

"We recently have had a black squirrel in our garden I was wondering if any one else has seen any," said Ms Papps, who lives near Hayes Town.

The first black squirrel was reportedly spotted in Hertfordshire in 1912 after an aristocrat introduced them to the country.

At the moment research is been carried out to see how far the rare breed has spread around the UK.

The Black Squirrel Project is a study lead by the Department of Life Sciences at Anglia Ruskin University.

The creatures originate from North America and are exactly the same as grey squirrels, apart from they are missing a piece of DNA that produces pigment, meaning they can only grow black fur.
