Plans for up to 1,600 homes, a theatre, shops and a new primary school at the RAF Uxbridge site have moved a step closer.

The draft plan from the base's owner, Defence Estates, was discussed at last Thursday's Hillingdon Council cabinet meeting.

Councillors supported the blueprint as a positive move for the area's economy and as a way of providing more 'affordable' homes, and indicated that a planning application closely based on the draft would be likley to succeed.

The draft plan comes out of a public consultation last autumn, in which more than 3,000 residents and business people were surveyed and asked what kind of development they would like to see.

There were 339 replies.

The former RAF base, in Hillingdon Road, is to be divided into four quarters, one as a 'town centre', with shops, restaurants, a theatre and 700 homes.

Another 760 homes are proposed for another quarter, and there will be a primary school and 80 homes in another quarter.

The last quarter will be used to retain and protect the Green Belt next to the River Pinn.

Defence Estates is expected to submit its detailed planning application this summer.

Councillor Doug Mills (Con, Manor) said: "This development will give the younger generation the chance to carry on living in the same area as their parents because it will provide them with more affordable housing.

Councillor Keith Burrows, (Con, Uxbridge South), said: "I think this is going to revitalise the area and it is probably going to be the biggest application the council will be dealing with for the next few years.

"I would have liked a greater response (to the survey) but we have taken on board what has been said by residents."
