An artist hoping to build a major sculpture on Hanworth's Butts Farm estate is rowing from Oxford to Cambridge to raise money for the project.

Christopher Guest has been working with Refugee Art and Culture Enterprise (RACE) since a local school asked him to design the six metre concrete creation three years ago.

But with estimated costs of £70,000, and with only a £15,000 grant from Hounslow Council secured so far, he has a long way to go.

He told the Chronicle: "I'm passionate about the project. Involving young people on the Butts Farm estate is key to the project.

"What we need right now is feedback from the whole community about how to move forward with the project."

Mr Guest said public participation plays a crucial part in the production and hopes his sponsored row will encourage young people to come up with their own ideas of ways to raise money for this cause and others.

The sculpture will be six metres long, less than two metres wide, and 85cm at the highest point, with the aim of combining art with a seating and play area for families.
