The Government has bulldozed public opinion, announcing that Heathrow will get a third runway.

To get its way, Labour has sought a five-year postponement in meeting EU air quality targets.

These rules were agreed by the Government to protect the quality of life of every EU citizen. But now it seems providing thousands more planes over London is more important.

Mayor Boris Johnson says he will mount a legal challenge to fight the third runway. EU air quality rules would be a powerful tool in any such challenge. But not so long ago the Conservatives supported expansion of Heathrow. Will the Mayor now overcome his party's anti-Europeanism to trump the third runway battle?

Liberal Democrats have consistentlyopposed expanding Heathrow. We will use every weapon in the armoury, including taking the fight to Brussels, to battle for quality of life for Londoners and against climate change.

They are simply too important to give up.
