A STORY about the grim murder of a wealthy Victorian aristocrat has been chosen by 11 and 12-year-olds in the borough as their favourite book of the year.
The Montgomery Murder by Cora Harrison was voted top of a list of shortlisted children's titles following a lively event at Winston Churchill Hall in Ruislip, at which pupils acted out scenes from their favourite books.Over the past six months year seven students from 16 secondary schools across the borough have been eagerly reading six different titles, with a view to naming one as their favourite.
The recently published titles were chosen by the school's library service as books most likely to appeal to boys and girls alike, capturing their imaginations and encouraging them to become avid readers for life. The scheme started in 2003 and was the first of its kind in the south of England.
Hannah Killala, from the Hillingdon schools library service, told the Gazette: "There were very lively and varied presentations and each pupil explained why they had chosen their book. The children enjoyed it, it was one of the best years yet."
Artwork that some of the children have drawn to illustrate the stories will go on display at Uxbridge Library from Monday, March 28, to Friday, April 8.
