EVERYBODY’S guilty pleasure – Johnny Robinson from Harrow – could be this year’s surprise champion on The X-Factor.
After entering the live shows three weeks ago and being branded a novelty act by judges, the odds on the singer to go all the way are in free fall.
Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes, speaking from the head office in Rayners Lane, Harrow, said: “Punters can’t get enough of Johnny. We are having to cheer the local man on through gritted teeth, as he’s now one of our worst results.”
The judges at the live ITV1 show on Saturday could not talk over the noise of the crowd chanting Johnny’s name after his fantastic rendition of I Believe in a Thing Called Love by The Darkness.
In the first week of the live shows, Jo-Ro’s odds were 100/1, but they have plummeted to 20/1 in just three weeks.
Not only are the odds on him winning falling, but people are putting more obscure bets on the West
Harrow resident’s chances.
According to Ladbrokes, Johnny is 10/11 to sing in drag during a live show and 150/1 to win The X-Factor.
Walt Utz, a manager at Madame Jojo’s in Soho, where Johnny used to perform as his alter-ego Sarah Lee, said: “I think he absolutely should sing in drag.
“The British public have a love affair with drag and the Carry On genre, and I think they would love it. I hope they are already preparing it. If anyone can pull it off, he can.”
Johnny’s friend, Gary King, a 60-year-old DJ from Eastcote, added: “The thing about Johnny is, what you see is what you get. He’s got such a great bubbly personality and such an incredible voice. I think he could go all the way.”
