PROTESTERS have flocked to Preston Library to protect it from council workers who are attempting to clear the building of its cherished books.

Trucks arrived at Carlton Avenue East at around 9.40am this morning to remove books and equipment from the boarded up library.

The action is being taken following last Thursday's High Court ruling, which will see 50 per cent of the borough's libraries closed.

The passionate protests are continuing across the borough, as campaign group Brent SOS has announced that it will be lodging an appeal with the Court of Appeal.

Residents and campaigners are at Preston Library now, and say they have managed to stop the council from clearing the building.

Some people have taken to scrawling their thoughts about the closure of six Brent libraries on boards and posters.

A spokesman for Brent SOS said: "An appeal is being prepared, but the swift removal of all books and equipment is designed to create a fait accompli, and make re-opening the library almost impossible, should the decision be overturned."

Meanwhile Kensal Rise Library remains unboarded due to the efforts of local people who have maintained a 24 hour presence since Thursday, with some even sleeping outside the building.
