Proposals for a new primary free school in Brentford have been submitted in a bid to tackle the growing problem over lack of school places in the area.

Founder of educational charity, Floreat, James O'Shaughnessy, and his team are behind the plans to start up a new two-form entry school, admitting 60 reception pupils each year, from September 2015.

The submission was made to the Department for Education last Friday (9).

Developers ISIS, who are behind the Brentford Lock West development, have offered to provide the land to build the school on Commerce Road, said Mr O'Shaughnessy who has worked as David Cameron's former head of policy between 2010 and 2011, and left Number 10 to start Floreat and set up free schools in the areas of London which needed them the most.

The father of three said: "I'm delighted to announce that, last Friday, Floreat Education submitted our bid for a new primary free school in Brentford.

"We've had a terrific six months working with the local community as we've developed our plans.

"Both parents and residents have been very positive about our proposal for a new school with a knowledge-rich curriculum and an explicit focus on developing pupils' character strengths.

"We hope to get an interview with the DfE this summer, and if that goes well we should get the green light in September.

"After that it won't be long before we're welcoming our first 60 Reception pupils in September 2015.

"Brentford urgently needs new primary school places, and the whole Floreat team is incredibly excited about creating a new school in the heart of the community."

Brentford was identified as an area of need for a primary school due to its growing population and over the past six months the team have engaged with parents living nearby and as part of outreach work have approached children's centres and churches.

Mr O'Shaughnessy said they already have 100 per cent sign ups for the first two years.

The educational charity also has plans to set up a free school in Earlsfield, Wandsworth, for opening in September 2015.

Meanwhile, secondary headteachers in the borough have come together and launched plans for a new secondary free school in the Brentford and Isleworth area with a vision to open in September 2017.
