THE Queen’s Diamond Jubilee is less than one month away and people across Hillingdon are busy preparing for their celebratory street parties.

On the first weekend of June across the borough there will be 102 events and the Gazette will be previewing several over the next four weeks.

One is at Swakeley’s Road, in Ickenham, on Monday, June 4. As it is a main thoroughfare, Hillingdon Council cannot close the street, so one resident has volunteered to host it in her own garden.

Diana May said: “The new gas barbecue will be sizzling and there will be children’s games, souvenirs and a prize for the best bunting.

“Let’s show people who drive through Swakeley’s Road that we know how to celebrate in this corner of the world.”

The event is being organised with the help of the South Swakeleys Neighbourhood Watch, of which Mrs May is secretary.

Party guests are required to wear red, white and blue, but there will also be an international flavour with Italian, French, Iraqi, Indian and American influences in the street helping to diversify the party menu.

“Last time we had a competition for who had the best samosas,” Mrs May added.

? Next week: Up to her neck in home-made bunting.

The Gazette wants to hear from anyone hosting street parties for the Diamond Jubilee. We are beefing up our team of photographers to capture as many events as possible during the celebrations. Contact the newsdesk on 01895 451 036 or email editorialuxbridge@trinitysouth.co.uk.
