A “larger than life” joker who passed away on Christmas eve is being remembered by his family.

Entertainer Winston Wheeler who was recently featured in the Chronicle because of his charity work, died aged 91 after failing to recover from Pneumonia.

The great-grandfather who lived in Lavender Court Sheltered Accommodation, in Beckett's Close, Feltham, was known in the community as a comedian and member of renowned Feltham entertainment group, “The Splinters”.

Grandson Simon Weir, 36, of Star Road in Isleworth, said: “He was a real entertainer, people remember him for all the acts and characters he did.
He was a larger than life character and a great grandfather. Even when he was in the hospital he was still trying to make jokes with the nurses.”

Previous to moving into sheltered accommodation Mr Wheeler lived in Uxbridge Road, Feltham for 40 years with wife Nancy who he was married to for 60 years.

Nancy passed away in 2001 after Winston spent a number of years caring for her.

Mr Wheeler was captured as a prisoner of war in Dunkirk while in the army's Queens Own Regiment in WWII, he spent nearly the entire war on a work farm in Poland.

The much-loved character also worked as a manager at the Putney branch of Adrian Hall Garden Centres, from 1977 until his retirement over 20 years later.

Winston was well know in Feltham for his fun-loving character and often entertained visitors to the Feltham Constitutional Club in Hanworth Road and Feltham's old EMI club.
