A PETITION has been handed to the fire authority by politicians concerned about planned cuts.

Labour councillor Aslam Choudry, lead member for crime prevention and public safety at Brent Council, was joined by Labour’s Navin Shah, assembly member and vice chairman of the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority, at its headquarters to submit a petition signed by 300 people opposing the proposed changes.

The Conservative Mayor of London’s Draft London Safety Plan proposes the closure of 12 fire stations, the decommissioning of 18 fire engines and loss of 520 firefighter posts. No fire stations in Brent or Harrow would close.

The proposals are due to the authority needing to mitigate a £45m cut to its budget.

Mr Choudry said: “Through this petition the people of Brent are telling Boris and the chairman of the Fire Authority with one clear voice that they do not want to see the safety and security of their communities compromised. I wholeheartedly support this petition.”
