OFFICERS from the Home Office were the uninvited guests at a wedding in Uxbridge on Wednesday.

Home Office Immigration Enforcement officials swooped on a wedding between an Indian student and a Portuguese woman at the Civic Centre just before 3pm.

They had been alerted by council staff during the couple's pre-wedding interview, when it became clear the two did not seem to know much about each other and did not share a common language.

After being interviewed separately the woman admitted she had been paid £3,000 to take part in the marriage.

The 24-year-old Indian student, who had been living in Hayes, was arrested for breaching the terms of his student visa.

He now faces deportation back to his home country.

During a search of his home address in Belmore Avenue, Hayes, officers arrested a 29-year-old Indian man who had entered the country illegally.

He was also detained and faces removal from the UK.

The woman was released without charge.
