POLICE have new powers to combat teenage troublemakers with the introduction of a town centre dispersal order.

Youngsters aged under 16 found in the area of Hayes after 9pm, not accompanied by a responsible adult, may be taken home by an officer if they are involved in, or at risk from, anti-social behaviour.

The police and community support officers have the power to disperse large groups whose presence has resulted in a member of the public being harassed, intimidated or distressed. Individuals can then be excluded from the specified area for up to 24 hours.

The dispersal order, intended to reduce alcohol-related nuisance and drug dealing in the town centre, will last until February 10, 2009. Anyone who refuses to comply with the direction to disperse could face a £2,500 fine, or even prison.

Sergeant Simon Robson said: "This order will enable police to disperse those intent on causing anti-social behaviour and help improve the quality of life for all who live and work in the area."

The order covers Station Road, Western View, Silverdale, Chalfont and Austin roads, Crown Close, Pump Lane, Coldharbour Lane, East Way, East Avenue, Glebe Road, Central Avenue, and Botwell Lane. It includes all alley-ways and car parks in the area.
