HILLINGDON Police have issued a warning to motorists after opportunist thieves left a woman in hospital after stealing her car.
The tragic act took place in Slough on Tuesday after a thief stole the vehicle and ran her over while she was de-icing her car.
It was the most serious in a number of thefts across the country where drivers have left their keys in the ignition and the engine running as they attempt to heat up their vehicles.
Mike Smooker, a crime prevention officer based at West Drayton police station has urged drivers to err on the side of caution during the cold winter days and keep their keys on them at all times.
He said: "It is advisable to remove ice and frost from the windows with a scraper before starting the engine.
"Once it is removed sit in the car, start the engine and wait for the demister to clear the windows, make sure the glass is completely clear before driving off.
"Under no circumstances should you get out the car while the engine is running."
