POLICE are still hunting the person responsible for a huge fire in a tower block on the Heston Farm estate.

A man was arrested on suspicion of arson immediately after the blaze at Fenton House, in Biscoe Close, on February 10.

However, police revealed this week that he had been eliminated from their enquiries.

The fire is still believed to have been started deliberately and Inspector Will Holland, of Feltham and Heston Safer Neighbourhood Teams, said the investigation was ongoing.

An 80-year-old woman and a young baby were among those rescued from the 15-story block on the night of the fire. Five people were treated for smoke inhalation, though no one was seriously injured.

About 200 people had to be evacuated and residents of the fifth floor, which was badly damaged, were temporarily re-housed.

A spokeswoman for Hounslow Homes, which manages the building, said all residents had now returned to their homes.

People living in the flats told the Chronicle they believed the fire had started when someone set light to a mattress in the hallway of the fifth floor.

They also spoke after the fire about fears for their safety in the block, where there are no smoke alarms in the corridors.

One woman said the smoke alarm in her flat had not been fixed more than three years after she had reported it as faulty.

However, Hounslow Homes said at the time of the fire that no improvements were needed. A spokeswoman this week said she was not aware of any safety changes that needed to be made.
