POLICE are hunting whoever is behind a spate of arsons in the village.

Bins, street signs and garden fences appear to have been deliberately set alight in the streets close to Northwood Road and Rickmansworth Road over the past two weeks, according to detectives.

They say they have had five reports since July 16, with the latest blaze on Friday last week.

All the fires have been started in the late evening or early hours.

A mother-of-two, who lives in Rickmansworth Road but did not want to be named, said: “What a stupid thing to do.

“That could be so dangerous.

“It is probably bored kids.

“The police just need to come down here and catch them.”

Paul Stone, chairman of Harefield Neighbourhood Watch, said. “I expect it is the same ones who go around doing all the trouble.

“They [the police] probably know who they are but they just need to catch them.”

Detective Constable Chris Hayward, who is investigating the arsons, said: “These offences have been committed by a person, or persons, who have no regard to other people’s property.

“We would like to speak to anyone who may have any information about these fires, regardless of how insignificant it may seem.”

“If you know who might be involved in these incidents, call 020 8246 1447.”

Anyone wishing to stay anonymous can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

The incidents are the latest eruption of anti-social behaviour in the village.

In March, the borough’s safer transport team used a ‘decoy bus’, packed with police officers instead of passengers, to try to catch yobs who were throwing stones along the route of the 331.

And in October last year there were reports of youths standing on the green shining laser pens at passing aircraft.
