Police were fired at in Ladbroke Grove yesterday as gunmen opened fire during a car chase.

Officers from Paddington Green Police Station were tailing a silver Audi that had been reported stolen from First Avenue in North Kensington at 3.17pm.

They tried to stop the car, which had three people inside, but gunmen instead fired at the officers in Herries Street through the back window.

The suspects then drove into a dirt track behing a bus garage in Westbourne Grove and shot again, this time at close range, before crashing into another police car waiting at the end of the track. All three people inside then ran away, chased by police on foot.

Two suspects were caught and arrested - one for attempted murder and one for possession of a firearm and aggravated taking without consent - and a gun was found. Several roads in the area were closed yesterday afternoon as police hunted the other suspect, but he is still at large.

Two officers were taken to hospital as a result of the car crash but have now been discharged from hospital following treatment.

The incident is being investigated by Det Supt Martin Huxley from the Flying Squad and Det Supt Peter Newman, the OCU Commander for Westminster North, who will be dealing with community issues.
