Cheers rang out as controversial plans for five-a-side pitches at a disused sports ground were rejected.

Families claimed floodlights and noisy players using 10 football 'cages' at the former Centaurs RFC ground in Oaklands Avenue, Isleworth, would make their lives unbearable.

But the applicant Goals insisted its plans were the only way to save the Grade II-listed Art Deco pavilion on the grounds, which is badly in need of renovation.

Councillors narrowly rejected the proposals at Monday night's meeting of the Sustainable Development Committee.

However, the long-awaited Heston Schools project (pictured) is finally set to get underway after the latest plans received the green light.

A new infant and junior school and improved facilities for students at Heston Community School in Heston Road, Heston, are scheduled to open in September 2011.

Plans for 225 homes and 13 industrial units at the old Lascar Works site in Staines Road, Hounslow, were also approved.
