DRAMATISED historic tours round Pitzhanger Manor are coming back by popular demand.

Guided by one of Sir John Soane’s maids in replica dress from the 1800’s, the family-friendly free tours started last month and gave visitors a glimpse of bygone days.

The tours will provide insight into one of Ealing’s finest manor houses, with historical information and amusing anecdotes explaining how it made its mark in history.

In 1800, renowned architect, Sir John Soane, bought the site and demolished most of the existing manor. He then set about building his own home, which he saw as an advertisement for his own idiosyncratic architectural style with its stripped classical detail, radical colour schemes and inventive use of space and light.

Ealing Council leader Councillor Julian Bell said: “I’m delighted that our free heritage tours last month were such a hit with visitors that we’ve been able to bring them back just in time for the summer holidays.

"I would encourage residents to take advantage of our free heritage tours, as it’s a great opportunity to get a glimpse of life in the early 19th Century whilst learning about the fascinating history of Sir John Soane’s family manor.”

Tours will take place on Sundays on 4 August at 3pm, 18 August at 1:15pm, Saturday, 31 August at 3pm and Sunday 22 September at 2pm. All tours will leave from Pitzhanger Manor and will run for around 45 minutes. The whole family is welcome, but the tour will be most enjoyable for children aged six and over.
