Hundreds of people enjoyed an afternoon of rustic entertainment at Ruislip Woods Festival on May 11.

Top of the attractions was the Welsh Axemen Lumberjacks race where competition was fierce between two axe wielding men.

The wood chips were flying as they competed to chop through tree trunks in record time and the crowd which had gathered joined in roaring their support.

Another new feature at the annual event held on Willow Lawn at Ruislip Lido, was the chance for youngsters and their parents to try their hand at archery with the expert help of the Ruislip Archers.

Woodland craftsmen proved fascinating as they demonstrated their art and showed off a range of products which can be made from natural woodland materials.

John the Falconer was back by popular demand with his birds of prey, including crowd favourite Dave and a falcon keen to show off his speed.

The afternoon finished with the roar of the tug of war as Woodland Officers and volunteers took on borough children. The small and mighty youngsters outnumbered their opponents to win the challenge.

Debbie Valman from the Ruislip Woods Trust said: "It was lovely to see so many local people enjoying the afternoon and learning more about these Ancient Woodlands on their doorstep.

"We are lucky to have the Woods so well preserved and grateful that the council support such a great event for residents."
