People living near to Pinn Meadows in Ruislip used some elbow grease over the weekend to give the green space a spruce up.

But this time 22 volunteers weren't using lawn mowers and rakes, they turned back time and used traditional scything techniques to cut overgrown grassy areas close to the River Pinn.

The Pinn Meadows Scything Festival and Big Picnic, organised by community group the Friends of Pinn Meadows and Hillingdon Council's Green Spaces Team led by countryside and conservation officer Dragana Knezevic, gave people a chance to try their hand at scything before enjoying a relaxing afternoon in the meadows next to King's College Road.

Ruislip's Red Watch fire crew from Ruislip Fire Station brought a fire engine along to the picnic for youngsters to get to have a look around.

Around 70 people attended the picnic and many joined in with a game of rounders.

The Mayor of Hillingdon, councillor Catherine Dann, was not afraid of swinging her own scythe alongside the working group.
