POPSTAR Peter Andre joined London Mayor Boris Johnson at Botwell Green Library this morning (Tuesday) to launch a new literacy scheme in the capital.
The unlikely duo were welcomed by a media circus, and read children's book 'The Gruffalo' to excited year two pupils from Botwell House Primary School.
The pair were promoting a scheme run by the National Literacy Trust which aims to recruit Literacy Champions and Reading Ambassadors across London, helping families with reading and preparing young children who are struggling with their learning for school.
The project is running across 12 boroughs, and the target is to enlist the help of 500 volunteers in the capital – 30 in Hillingdon.
Mr Johnson, who said his favourite children's book was Dr Seuss's The Cat in the Hat, said: "The aim of this scheme is to give parents the confidence to read to their kids, and encourage them to keep it up.
"Once they have cracked it, it will set them up for life and open up all sorts of doors."
Mr Andre, who has two children with glamour model Katie Price, added: "I am honoured to be fronting this campaign with Boris, and the children here today were just great.
"Reading doesn't need to be a chore, and the earlier we get our kids to embrace it, the better."
