THE perverse logic of the “Stop Veolia” (Observer Letters, June 7) is that Veolia’s construction of the Jerusalem Light Railway linking all parts of the city, Jewish and Arab is illegal and discriminatory.

It is based on the myth that Jews have no right to live in East Jerusalem. In fact the only times Jews have not lived in East Jerusalem, which contains the site of Solomon’s temple and other Jewish holy places, was when they were forcibly barred from doing so, such as between 1948 and 1967 when Jews ere ethnically cleansed from the area.

Today all citizens of Jerusalem, like the citizens of multi-cultural Harrow enjoy complete religious freedom.

Perhaps that is one of the reasons why in a November 2010 poll of East Jerusalem’s Arab residents, more indicated a preference to become a citizen of Israel than of a Palestinian state if a permanent two state solution can be worked out.

We trust that Harrow Council will award its contract on the strict merits of the respective tenders and ignore these single issue obsessives who constantly seek to demonise Israel.

Surely if they really want to do some good in the Middle East aiding the victims in neighbouring Syria would be a more useful conduit for their energies?
