A 70-year-old man has died after a blaze at sheltered accommodation for elderly.

The elderly man was rescued by fire fighters from Gillian House, in Elms Road, Harrow Weald, and taken to Northwick Park hospital, in Watford Road, where he later died.

The fire started in first floor flat which was badly damaged in the inferno.

The flats, which are owned by Harrow Churches Housing Association, were evacuated and thirty-five pensioners had to leave their homes on Saturday.

Four fire engines were called at 9.20pm and battled flames for more than an hour before leaving at 3am the next day after making the block safe.
