A PEDESTRIAN aged 88 broke his ankle when a bus leaving Harrow Bus Station ran over him.

The man was about a quarter of the way across the pedestrian crossing that links the bus station to the precinct outside Harrow-on-the-Hill station when he was struck by a double-decker.

He was knocked over by front of the vehicle before the nearside rear wheel ran over his foot, leaving him with a broken right ankle and cuts and bruises to his left ankle.

The incident in College Road happened at 10.50am on Saturday in front of shocked bystanders and involved the 258 service between Watford and South Harrow that is operated by Arriva.

Paramedics treated the victim and took him to St Mary's Hospital in Paddington, north-west London, where his condition is described as "non life-threatening".

Officers put up a cordon to preserve the scene before reopening the road at 1.50pm.

Arriva is reviewing the vehicle's closed-circuit television recordings as well as that of the bus station's security camera footage and other buses behind the one involved.

The incident is being investigated by officers from the Metropolitan Police's Traffic Investigation Unit at Alperton.
