MANY thanks for the excellent report on the front page of the Hayes Gazette about the work of the Hayes Town Partnership since its relaunch last year (Clean-up turns town around, Uxbridge Gazette, July 1).

I would be grateful if you would allow me to make two additions.

The first is that the progress we have made has been as a result of a team effort. Not only has the partnership had strong support from the council but, crucially, it has also benefited from the full involvement of the local MP, John McDonnell, the ward councillors, the police and the Chamber of Trade.

As your article reports, one of our main successes has been in tackling crime, but this would not have happened without the council's Community Safety team working so effectively with the police, led by the borough commander, Carl Bussey, and Superintendent Iestyn Prosser, who has chaired our Community Safety group.

The second point is that we are far from complacent. There are still many issues to tackle in Hayes Town if we are to reverse the 20 years of decline, and not least of these is the need to make people feel safer at night.

However, with continued co-operation between key organisations and the support of the local community, I believe we can make even more progress in the year ahead.
