PARKING meters have been vandalised twice by thieves who swiped the cash, despite CCTV cameras having been installed as a deterrent.

Car parks in Love Lane and Chapel Lane, Pinner, have fallen victim to vandals in the last few weeks and the damage caused to the council-owned property temporarily put the machines out of action. Motorists users were able to park free until the repairs were made.

Chapel Lane was targeted on Tuesday last week and Love Lane on Friday, July 20.

Pinner Association’s highways and parking spokesman, Owen Cock, said: “This is not good.

“We had vandalism in Chapel Lane car park a few years ago but CCTV was put into action and the crimes reduced. I am hoping that the council have plans to help reduce this problem.

“In other boroughs you can use card paying parking meters which would be a good idea for our car parks because they will not tempt the people carrying out these crimes.

“We definitely need to look into it and we will work with the council to solve this problem.”

Portfolio holder for environment and community safety, Councillor Phillip O’Dell said: “This type of vandalism and theft from council property costs everyone money and we will not allow this to continue.

“We have strengthened the security features on our pay and display cash machines across the borough. This includes reinforcing the machines to make them more resistant to vandalism and theft, and emptying them even more regularly to prevent them from being repeatedly targeted.

“We are doing everything in our power to help the police with their investigation, which includes reviewing our CCTV footage.”

A Met Police spokesman confirmed police had been called on two separate occasions to investigate the theft of money from car parking meters in two different car parks in Pinner.

He said: “Police were contacted by Harrow Council to reports of a theft from parking meters. The enquiries are continuing and so far no arrests have been made.

Anyone with information about these incidents can call police on 101 call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
