FURIOUS parents are protesting at plans to build classrooms on playground space at their children’s school.

They say the expansion of Isleworth Town School would severely hit the learning and social experience of their children.

The Twickenham Road, Isleworth, school is one of a number in Hounslow borough that is being considered for expansion to meet the rising demand for primary school places.

Currently it has three classes per academic year and the possibility of increasing this to four would make it as big as a secondary school.

One mother Laura Dymott said: “I don’t want my child to go to school and just be a number. In addition we would lose space on the playground and playing field to extend the classes and it would be a real disruption.

“As well as a smaller area for children to get out and play in, there would be an increase in traffic around the school.”

Another parent said that even though Hounslow had one of the highest birth rates in London, the council had provided no new schools but instead expanded old ones.

The school has a roll of 510 pupils, excluding nursery, but the four-form plan will increase this to 840 children by 2020.

Deputy headteacher, Michelle McCarthy, said: “Because of exceptional demand for primary school places within Hounslow, there is a proposal to expand a number of schools within the borough. One of these schools may be Isleworth Town because it is a good school, which is oversubscribed.

“The consultation process has begun and all our parents have been given a copy of the consultation document to which they can respond.

“There are two meetings with a representative from the local authority being held at the school this month to which all parents have been invited. Hopefully, these will provide a forum for all members of the school community to express their views about future expansion.”
