WHERE were you when Andy Murray won Wimbledon? For nearly 1,000 people that answer will be Hammersmith.

Hundreds flocked to Hammersmith on Sunday to watch the Scot make sporting history by becoming the first British Wimbledon champion in 77 years.

The crowds were out in force on the hottest day of the year to watch the epic final between Murray and world number one Novak Djokovic on the big screen.

Supporters embraced the sweltering heat of Lyric Square and cheered on Murray emphatically as he showed his tennis credentials by beating his rival in straight sets in a truly historic match.

Local businesses reported a massive boost in trade thanks to the big screen and deck chairs, supplied by business improvement district (BID) HammersmithLondon.  Although the deck chairs were like gold dust that didn't matter to the hundreds of tennis fans who sat on the ground and lined the streets to catch this momentous occasion.

The event was part of the BIDs on-going Summer Festival which has included free theatre performances in Lyric Square and a festival celebrating Arabic culture, Shubbak: Hafla on the Square.

HammersmithLondons Summer Festival continues this week with its Picnic in the Square events and its live stream of La Rondine from the Royal Opera House on Thursday 11 July, from 7.30pm and Tosca on Thursday 18 July.
