MORE than 100 eateries in Hounslow and the surrounding area are not up to scratch, according to council figures.

A freedom of information request submitted by the Chronicle revealed 126 premises in the Hounslow area received the lowest ratings of either 0 or 1 when inspected in the last year.

Borough council snoops found Hounslow to be the worst town, with 38 restaurants and take-away houses deemed "not broadly compliant".

This was followed by the Feltham, Bedfont and Hanworth area, with 22 restaurants underperforming in terms of health and safety. In Chiswick, 21 premises were not complying with regulations, this was also the case for 19 in Brentford, 10 in Isleworth and 16 in Heston, Cranford and Southall.
Tasty Bite on Kingsley Road, Hounslow, was one of the places to get a no star rating in the last inspection.

The council visitor said "major effort" was required to bring the shop to required standards, and that "little or no appreciation of food safety was evident".

Tom Negpal who works there said he was "surprised" at the result, and also shocked that Hounslow came out badly compared to other areas.

"We are going to renew things here to make changes, we are going to be shut for a couple of months to do that. I think at the end of June. The bad rating came not because of the food, but because the shop needs improving, the floor needs looking after and we need to redecorate."
Frangos is one of the success stories in the town, with a five star rating in its last inspection.

Manager of the High Street shop, Dee Tak, said: "To hear that Hounslow is one of the worst surprises me, we keep a very high standard.
"I do not know why there is a higher problem in Hounslow, there are a lot of little restaurants opening up and sometimes they are not regularly checked up on. I think there need to be more inspections."

Philip Sutcliffe, spokesman for Hounslow Borough Council, said: "Following an inspection these non-compliant premises will be subjected to the full range of enforcement action ranging from warning letters and revisits to the service of hygiene improvement notices. Rarely,a premises may be closed if there is thought to be an imminent health risk.

"The premises will continue to be revisited until we are satisfied that it has improved to the level of 'broad compliance', however the risk rating is not changed until the next full inspection."
