AN OUT-OF-WORK child minder fears she may be forced to put down her sickly cat as she cannot afford the vet bills.
Mabel Spillane, of Willcott Road, Acton has been unable to find work for the past three months. But it is not her household bills that are preying on her mind but the future of Benji, the pet she has owned and loved for 10 years.
The ginger puss has severe arthritis and underwent major surgery to ease the pain in his leg two weeks ago. Although Mabel's kind neighbour Beryl Bashford offered to pay £500 of the £1,600 bill, she is asking for donations to help pay the remainder and the daily medication he requires.
The 58-year-old said: "I can't afford a private vet but Beryl loves Benji too. We took him to her vet and she offered to pay some of the money.
"I really don't want to put my cat to sleep. He's such a lovely cat, I've had him all his life and I still have his mother. I couldn't stand to lose him.
"All my life I've been working but the last four months I've been without work. Beryl contacted the pet charity Blue Cross but they said they couldn't help. I pray to God he'll be OK."
