I WRITE with reference to the two letters in the Chronicle from Harley Buckner and Ray Ferguson (April 24).

I would like to make it very clear that Hounslow Racial Equality Council (REC) is against any further expansion to Heathrow Airport because it affects everyone who either lives or works in Hounslow.

The role of Hounslow REC is to make sure that public bodies comply with their statutory obligations under the Race Relations Act - in other words ensuring that ethnic groups are treated fairly by government.

Hounslow REC challenged the Government because it failed to carry out a full impact assessment of its plans to increase east-bound flights from the northern runway at Heathrow, and this impacts negatively on the local population - including the diverse communities of Cranford and Heston.

Friends of the Earth's Rights & Justice Centre provided us with legal advice on the expansion proposals because it campaigns for environmental justice.

The point is that, thanks to this decision, everyone in Hounslow who stands to be affected will now benefit from a fuller government assessment of the expansion proposals.

SATVINDER BUTTAR Director, Hounslow Racial Equality Council.
