A supersized bus stop in Uxbridge is causing access problems for a town centre car park, with its staff saying it is an "accident waiting to happen."

The stop on Bakers Road near the corner with Belmont Road can accommodate three buses, but it stretches over the entrance to an underground car park for shoppers and people who work nearby, and to a service yard to the rear of WH Smith, Pizza Hut and other High Street shops.

Instances of buses blocking the exit for departing cars have been reported to the Gazette.

When the bus stop is fully occupied, drivers have to either wait or make a dangerous manoeuvre around the bus, with little space to avoid the curbs and obstructed sightlines to the road and oncoming traffic. This is not always an option, however, because a gap of around 12 feet separates the bus stop from a loading bay, used around the clock by Poundland lorries.

Paul Coleman, XL parking supervisor at the Bakers Road car park, has taken videos of parked buses to prove problem, and says it is "an accident waiting to happen."

He said: "Sometimes, the bus drivers park, turn the engine off and leave it there. I have spoken to a couple of them, and they just give me attitude. This all happens first thing in the morning as people are getting to work, and last thing at night when everyone is heading home and we are near closing, peak times.

"It is so dangerous, it is unreal. It is only a matter of time before someone pulls out at the wrong time and their car gets smashed."

Hillingdon council made the road layout changes, and Jean Palmer, Deputy Chief Executive and Corporate Director of Residents Services, said: "Bakers Road is busy so we consulted residents, local businesses and London Buses before installing these bus stops to ensure the layout meets everybody’s needs.

"Buses are allowed to drop off passengers next to the car park exits but they should not be parking there. We will raise the issue with London Buses and ask them to remind drivers of the rules."

Bakers Road is a main public transport interchange for Uxbridge, with many of the borough's buses either terminating and starting at the depot, or passing through.

The bus stop serves the 427, 607, U7, and N207 routes. The car park is open 7am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday.
