JUST one fifth of schools in Hillingdon are expected to open for all their pupils on Wednesday (30) as hundreds of public sector workers take strike action against the government.
Of the 90 local state primary and secondary schools, only 18 have said they would fully open.
Others will either close or part-close, with secondary schools the worst hit. Most said they would axe classes for younger pupils and only teach the GCSE and A-level students.
The nationwide walk-out, which could be Britain's biggest since 1926, will see all Hillingdon's day centres for the disabled closed and reduced provision for housing services.
It was uncertain whether normal bin collections and maintenance services would go ahead. The waste and recycling centre in Victoria Road, South Ruislip, will be closed.
Picket lines were due to form outside nearly every public building in the borough, including job centres, Hillingdon Hospital, Hillingdon Ambulance Station and Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs in Park Road, Uxbridge.
Workers will be encouraged to leave the pickets for a protest starting from outside Barclays Bank in Uxbridge at 12noon, followed by a march down High Street to the Civic Centre, where there will be a number of speeches.
TUC Hillingdon branch president Stuart Roderick, who has helped organise local industrial action, said: "We are expecting the biggest strikes since 1926.
"There will be in the region of 150 people at the protest in Uxbridge. Pretty much every school will have picket lines and all the main council buildings will have picket lines."
Across the UK, two million people were expected to strike in protest at the government's public sector pension deal, wage freezes and job cuts.
A regional rally in London will assemble at Lincoln's Inn Fields for 1pm, before joining the national rally in Victoria Embankment at 2pm.
