IT IS full marks for west London as new figures reveal the region’s secondary schools are among the best in country.

Ofsted, the official body for inspecting schools, released a report last week which showed all students in Hammersmith and Fulham, and Kensington and Chelsea are attending good or outstanding secondary schools.

Neighbouring borough Hounslow did just as well and Ealing was not far behind, with 86 per cent of its students attending good or outstanding schools.

The annual report published its results for all secondary schools and academies in England and shows 80 per cent of London’s students attend good or outstanding schools compared to 66 per cent nationally. Of the nine local authorities to achieve full marks, five were in the capital – Sutton and Harrow being the other two.

Councillor Helen Binmore, leader for children’s services at Hammersmith and Fulham Council, said: “This is a fantastic achievement for the borough, our schools, teachers, pupils and parents.

“Providing schools of choice is a key element of this strategy which means offering parents a real choice of good schools.

“It has been a joint effort to raise standards in our schools over the past few years and to make them places where our children, no matter what their background or circumstances, can get a first-class education and learn skills that are vital for their future and development.

“I am absolutely thrilled that our schools are getting the recognition they deserve and that our young people are getting the most out of their time in school.”

In the past six years the percentage of good or outstanding schools in Hammersmith and Fulham has risen from 81 to 100.

After record GCSE results this year, the findings came as welcome news to Kensington and Chelsea Council.

The authority’s leader for children’s services, Councillor Elizabeth Campbell, said: “This is good news for parents and follows on from record GCSE results this summer.

“We are very proud of our schools and work is now under way to build a new secondary school, the Kensington Aldridge Academy, in the north of the borough.”
